Wound Healing Information
Understanding how wounds heal is essential when caring for one at home. Recognizing each stage in the healing process allows you to spot problems early and take appropriate action. At AWC (Accelerated Wound Care), we bring expert wound treatment directly to patients across the Chicagoland area. Our team specializes in advanced mobile care, offering assessments, dressing changes, and real-time treatment adjustments in the comfort of your home. Here's what to know about how healing works—and how we support it.
Stages of Wound Healing
Hemostasis– This is the body’s immediate response to injury. Blood vessels constrict, platelets form a clot, and a fibrin mesh forms to stop bleeding and stabilize the site.
Inflammation– The immune system activates to prevent infection and clear out debris. You may notice swelling, warmth, or clear drainage as white blood cells get to work.
Proliferation– New tissue starts to form. Your body produces collagen, builds blood vessels, and lays the foundation for new skin. Healthy granulation tissue is a good sign during this stage.
Maturation– The final phase strengthens the wound site. Scar tissue develops and the skin rebuilds its structure. Larger wounds may take several months to fully mature.
What Can Slow Down The Wound Healing Process?
Advanced Age– As skin becomes thinner and less elastic with age, the body takes longer to close wounds and regenerate tissue.
Chronic Health Issues– Conditions like diabetes, poor circulation, and autoimmune disorders make it harder for the body to fight infection or deliver nutrients to the wound.
Oxygen Deficiency– Wounds need a steady oxygen supply to heal. Poor blood flow or vascular disease can delay tissue regeneration and increase the risk of complications.
Preexisting Skin Damage– If the skin is already compromised—by neuropathy, pressure, or trauma—healing becomes even more difficult.
